Naev can be installed as a portable application. This article describes how portable mode works, and how to configure it.
What is portable mode?
Normally, Naev stores all its user data (configs, screenshots, cached files) in a predetermined location. The location depends on your operating system (see the FAQ). In portable mode, Naev will not use this location, but instead use a manually configured location.
How to use portable mode
When Naev starts up, it will see if there's a file named
datapath.lua in the same directory as the game's binary. If this file exists, Naev will open it to see if a manual data path is defined. A data path definition looks like this:
datapath = "path_to_data_files"
- Note: On Windows, use slashes to delimit your path, not backslashes. The game does currently not support backslash delimiters.
If the definition is correct, then Naev will look in this path for its user data instead of the default path.
